Project Title: Understanding Anti-Racism in Counselor Education: A Narratology of Anti-Racist Pedagogy in Socio-cultural courses.
ABSTRACT
Counselors have the privilege to join children, adolescents, and adults from all walks of life in a journey of working towards mental and emotional wellness. Our code of ethics outlines 鈥渉onoring diversity and embracing a multicultural approach in support of the worth, dignity, potential, and uniqueness of people within their social and cultural contexts鈥 (p.3) and promoting social justice as two of our core professional values (American Counseling Association [ACA], 2014). The ACA also stated in their Antiracist Statement in 2020 that 鈥渨e have a moral and professional obligation to deconstruct institutions which have historically been designed to benefit White America.鈥 Despite these publicized statements, ACA has not released educational guidelines on how to teach counselors-in-training to be anti-racist counselors. Even when the flagship journal of counselor educators and supervisors, Counselor Education and Supervision (CES), released a special issue on anti-racist pedagogy in CES, there was a dearth of empirical articles that examined the experiences of clinical mental health counselors-in-training (CMHCIT) with anti-racist development. Utilizing anti-racist pedagogy throughout counselor preparation can hypothetically prepare CMHCITs to engage in anti-racist practices once they enter the field. However, with limited research on how CMHCITs engage with anti-racist pedagogy, that statement remains a hypothesis. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to understand how anti-racist pedagogy can support CMHCIT development. This study will use a narrative inquiry methodology to capture the stories of CMHCITs engaging with anti-racist pedagogy in sociocultural courses.
