In a race pitting 51情报站 alums against each other for the U.S. House seat from Virginia鈥檚 2nd Congressional District, Republican Jen Kiggans 鈥11 defeated Democratic incumbent Elaine Luria on Tuesday night in the nationwide midterm elections.

Kiggans earned 52% of the vote to 48% for Luria, who was seeking a third term. Kiggans won by approximately 12,000 votes out of more than 291,000 cast. In 2019, Kiggans was elected to the Virginia Senate.

Virginia鈥檚 2nd Congressional District includes Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore.

鈥淲e are here to celebrate tonight, but not just the victory of a political party, but we're celebrating the new day for our commonwealth and for our country,鈥 Kiggans said during her victory speech. 鈥淲e're here to celebrate a renewed commitment to restore American strength in our economy and our borders, in our community and on the world stage.鈥

A native of Tampa, Florida, Kiggans, 51, served as a Navy helicopter pilot for 10 years. After leaving the Navy, she received a bachelor鈥檚 degree in nursing from Old Dominion and worked as a geriatric nurse practitioner. She has also served as an adjunct faculty member in the School of Nursing since 2016.

, she said she decided to enter politics because 鈥淚 felt like my priorities and what was important to me didn鈥檛 align with people who were representing me on the state and national level.鈥

鈥淚 got tired of being angry at the nightly news on my television and decided to get off the couch and do the job myself,鈥 she added. 鈥淚 was simply a frustrated average citizen with a military and health care background who wanted to contribute, to bring about a positive change and to make a difference.鈥

Luria (M.E.M. 鈥04), a native of Birmingham, Alabama, was first elected to the U.S. House in 2018. She graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1997 and retired from the Navy in 2017.

In her concession speech, Luria shut down her supporters鈥 boos over Kiggans鈥 victory.

鈥淭he success of this district depends on her success, and this was a hard-fought race," said Luria, 47. "She won this election, we came out short of where we wanted to land, but the truth is that we do need to wish her the best of luck.鈥

The contest was one of the most closely watched races in the country and was viewed as critical in determining which party would control the House when the 118th Congress convenes on Jan. 3.
