51情报站 is participating in a 10-week intercollegiate recycling competition called RecycleMania, and the campus community's help is needed.

Last year, 51情报站 ranked 99th out of 237 schools with a total of 257,000 recycled materials collected.

It brings a social awareness and a social conscience to our campus community.

"It's important to be part of this noble deed. We are helping the community while practicing good stewardship," said Harvey Logan, 51情报站 Facilities Management support services manager.

RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities.

Over a 10-week period each spring, colleges across the United States and Canada report the amount of recycling and trash collected each week and are in turn ranked in various categories based on which institution recycles the most on a per capita basis. With each week's updated ranking, participating schools follow their performance against other colleges and use the results to rally their campus to reduce and recycle more.

National recognition is provided to the winning school in each category on the RecycleMania website and in a national press release. Winning schools receive an award made out of recyclable materials, and win the right to host that category's special traveling trophy for the coming year.

Recycled materials are picked up by the department but may also be dropped off at 4401 Powhatan Avenue, Norfolk VA 23525. Recyclemania ends April 1.

For information on how faculty and staff can participate in the recycling efforts on campus, or to find out what materials are recyclable, visit the University's recycling website.
