Beginning Harp Class

Group harp classes through the Community Music Division are currently suspended, check back for updated information!

This class is for students 10 and up who desire to learn to read music while developing harp technique. Correct posture and curved hand position will be encouraged. This class will cover basic rhythmic structure, key signatures, and simple chord progressions. As students learn throughout the course, music will increase in skill level.聽Harp classes are limited to 2 students per class.

Melvin Lauf, Jr. an Ohio native, is a graduate of The Armed Forces School of Music. During his first tour in the U.S. Army, he was stationed with the 113th Army Band "Dragoons" at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He spent the rest of his military service as a fife instrumentalist with "The Old Guard" Fife and Drum Corps, Fort Myer, Virginia in the greater DC area.

Separate from his military career, Lauf has written works for various ensembles, most notably for the flute and flute ensembles. He is currently retired from the military living in Newport News, Virginia and is an active flutist, piccoloist, and harpist in addition to running his company,聽听笔耻产濒颈肠补迟颈辞苍蝉. Mevlin taught woodwinds, trumpet, and harp at the Liberty Academy of the Arts in Hampton, Virginia.

He currently plays harp with the Hampton Roads Philharmonic, piccolo and harp with the Chesapeake Bay Wind Ensemble, and piccolo and assistant conductor with the Peninsula Concert Band.

Lauf's works are published by Nourse Wind Publications, ZAXSTON Press, and聽听笔耻产濒颈肠补迟颈辞苍蝉.

Adults and teens age 10+

Note: Children between the ages of 6 and 12 who are interested in harp are recommended to take private harp instruction. If they have a strong musical background they may contact us to speak with the instructor to see if they would be a good fit for the group class.

Cancellation

To withdraw from a course you must send a request in writing to oducmd@odu.edu or call 757-683-4075 one business day prior to the start date of the course. Failure to attend a course does not constitute withdrawal. Course registration fees, less a $25 processing fee will be refunded via check per 51情报站 policy (we are unable to return money to a debit or credit card). There are no refunds once the class has begun.
