Lifelong Learning Class

12-week Lifelong Learning Class held on Tuesday mornings from 10am 12 noon taught by Karen Hoy. The course, offered in the Fall and Spring semesters, features a variety of guest speakers and performers, including many from the Virginia Opera Association.

Opera for Everyone follows the season of The Virginia Opera and various other opera events. Each fall and spring the class meets for 12 weeks. A dress rehearsal and behind the scenes tour are included for select productions. Course registration can be done online, in advance or in-person at the first class meeting. Highlights

Participants will study the Virginia Opera Association's 50th year season, including听Don Giovanni听by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in October,听Carmen听by George Bizet in November,听Cos矛 fanTutte听听by W.A. Mozart in February and March, and lastly,听Loving V. Virginia,听a contemporary opera commissioned by Virginia Opera and Richmond Symphony composed by 51情报站 Alum, Damien Geter, with Libretto by Jessica Murphy Moo will be showcasing in April. Course Details

Karen Hoy

Originally from Philadelphia, received the Bachelor of Music degree from Temple University and Master of Science degree from The Juilliard School. Ms. Hoy has performed extensively in recital, opera and oratorio. Her major instructors were Ellen Faull, Estelle Liebling, and Eleanor Steber. She has won numerous vocal competitions including first place from the Liederkranz Foundation, second place from the Kosciusko Foundation, and the Flagler Museum's Recital Award. Prominent conductors and directors she has worked with include James Conlon (Alice Tully Hall), Robert Page, Martial Singher, James Lucas, Gustav Meier, Abraham Kaplan, Anton Coppola and Boris Goldovsky.

  • Explore the details of opera productions presented by the Virginia Opera including: music, libretti, historical background and life of the composer
  • Attend VOA rehearsals and see how opera productions are put together
  • Become acquainted with various arts organizations in Tidewater, and hear about their season schedules
  • Pen/pencil and paper for taking notes.
  • Librettos and Course Book for each opera available in class.

  • In person by lecture, demonstration, and class discussion. Online viewing of full production of each opera along with various videos of conductors, stage directors, singers and other aspects of opera production. Class members participates in dramatic readings of the libretti.
  • Anyone interested in deepening their knowledge of opera, its traditions and performance practices.
  • Course includes VIP parking next to the Diehn Fine & Performing Arts building.

Cancellation Policy

To withdraw from a course you must send a request in writing to听oducmd@odu.edu听or call 757-683-4075 one business day prior to the start date of the course. Failure to attend a course does not constitute withdrawal. Course registration fees, less a $25 processing fee will be refunded via check per 51情报站 policy (we are unable to return money to a debit or credit card). There are no refunds once the class has begun.
