Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene Post-Licensure

The Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene (BSDH) Post-licensure Online program is designed for students who have completed a certificate or associate degree from an accredited dental hygiene program and desire to continue their education toward a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene. The program provides an opportunity for the licensed dental hygienist to gain knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for expanded career opportunities in education, oral health promotion, research, community and public health, management, and marketing. This program also provides a strong foundation for graduate studies.

The BSDH Post-Licensure Online Program is available online or as a hybrid of online and on-campus courses.

A licensed dental hygienist educated at another institution who desires to pursue the Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene should apply and be accepted by 51情报站 as an upper-level dental hygiene transfer student. Formal acceptance as a dental hygiene major will be determined by the Admissions Committee for the BSDH Post-licensure Online Program. Persons seeking admission to the 51情报站 BSDH Post-Licensure Online Program should follow these steps:

  1. Complete an听online application听to 51情报站 as a degree-seeking student.

    a. Transcripts to support your online university application must be official and mailed directly from your previous institution to Old Dominion's Admissions Office at 51情报站, Office of Admissions, Rollins Hall, Norfolk, VA 23529.

  2. Complete the supplemental application to the Dental Hygiene Program through DHCAS.

    a. Apply to DHCAS:听

    b. Request transcripts from all college-level coursework (all previous educational institutions attended since high school). Because this might take some time to be received and processed, applicants are encouraged to enter in their colleges and request a transcript at the beginning of the process.

    c. Request high school transcripts.

    d. Request two letters or recommendation. Go to the evaluation section of your application and enter your recommenders' names and email addresses. Be sure to do this accurately. Your recommenders will then receive and email from听dhcasinfo@dhcas.orgrequesting they provide an online evaluation.

  3. Upload supplemental forms to the documents section of the application, including:

    a. Current resume
    b. Photocopy of current RDH license
    c. Photocopy of current CPR certification (upload this in the section titled "other")
    d. Photocopy of National Board Dental Hygiene Examination Results

Application Deadline

Applicants must be accepted to 51情报站 initially. Admission to the University does not constitute admission to the BSDH Post-Licensure Online Program.

The BSDH Post-Licensure Online Program accepts applications anytime between November 1st and July 1st. Once accepted into the program, students can start Fall, Spring, or Summer semester.

Transfer students must satisfy the following:

  1. Certificate or associate degree in dental hygiene from an accredited dental hygiene program.
  2. Students without credit for ENGL 110C must pass the Writing Sample Placement Test (WSPT).
  3. Successful completion of the University Lower-Level General Education requirements and/or equivalent. The general education requirement of philosophy and ethics oral communication, and impact of technology is satisfied in the major for the Post-Licensure Online Program.
  4. Successful completion of department requirements or the equivalent. A grade of (C) or better is required in all courses.
  5. Successful completion of 15 credits at the upper division to include a minimum of six credits to meet the Upper-Division General Education requirement.
  6. Successful completion of five major courses: DNTH 412W, DNTH 414, DNTH 415, DNTH 416, DNTH 440T.
  7. Successful completion of听,听, or听, or听, and the writing intensive (W) course in the major with a grade of C or better and the Senior Assessment Survey.
  8. Applicants who hold an associate of applied science degree rather than an associate of science degree must meet the University's lower-level General Education requirements.

Entry-level and B.S.D.H. Post-Licensure online dental hygiene students who have a cumulative 3.30 grade point average and senior standing may complete the Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene to Master of Science (BSDH-MS) dental hygiene linked program application. This program allows exceptional undergraduate students the opportunity to take up to 12 credit hours of graduate course work and apply them to both the undergraduate and graduate degrees. Students in the linked program must earn a minimum of 150 credit hours (120 discrete credit hours for the undergraduate degree and 30 discrete credit hours for the graduate degree).
