Degree-Seeking domestic students can enroll for graduate student health insurance via the Aetna Student Health website here:ÌýÌýWe recommend that students enroll for coverage for the Fall semester and the Spring/Summer semester separately. We are currently in the open enrollment period for Fall coverage. The deadline for enrolling for is September 30, 2024.Ìý International students will automatically be enrolled.

Eligibility & Enrollment
International students with F-1 and J-1 visas are enrolled in the Student Injury and Sickness insurance plan upon registration for coursework. J-1 Scholars and F-1s on OPT are eligible to enroll. Costs associated with enrollment will be added to the tuition statement. International students that have questions regarding this process or wish to waive coverage or must contact VISA at intlstu@odu.edu for assistance. All degree-seeking graduate students enrolled in courses at 51Ç鱨վ's main campus or one of the regional higher education centers and their eligible dependents may enroll. Students who meet the eligibility requirements can enroll online via the following link:Ìý.ÌýPayment in full or selection of a payment plan is required when you enroll. If you select pay by month, you will need to pay the premium for the first two months when you enroll. Subsequent payments will be monthly for your selected coverage period.
Post-Doctoral Fellows hired by 51Ç鱨վ or the 51Ç鱨վ Research Foundation, and their eligible dependents are eligible to enroll in the Aetna Student Health plan. Post-Doctoral Fellows are not eligible for the health insurance subsidy.

Questions regarding the payment of the subsidy should be directed to gradhealth@odu.edu. If you do not receive your subsidy, please contact us as soon as possible. Subsidies cannot be awarded retroactively beyond the plan year.
Subsidy Eligibility
Graduate Assistants earning a total of $5,000 a semester or more from 51Ç鱨վ, 51Ç鱨վ Research Foundation, or the Virginia Consortium in Clinical Psychology are eligible to receive a health insurance subsidy. The subsidy is distributed mid-semester and is taxable. Graduate assistants will receive their subsidy payments as part of their paychecks. The amount of the subsidy for the 2024-2025 academic year is $1,100. The subsidy is paid by semester, $500 for Fall and $600 for Spring.
Graduate Fellows receiving $5,000 or more from 51Ç鱨վ are eligible to receive a health insurance subsidy. The amount of the subsidy for the 2024-2025 academic year is $1,100. The subsidy is paid by semester, $500 for Fall and $600 for Spring. The subsidy will be paid through the Financial Aid Office with distribution mid-semester.
*IMPORTANT: Graduate students who are working as graduate assistants or receiving an 51Ç鱨վ fellowship enrolling for the summer semester onlyÌýwill notÌýbe eligible for the subsidy. Please note subsidy payments are considered taxable income.
- 51Ç鱨վ Graduate Assistants making less than $5,000 per semester in Fall and Spring

Plan Highlights
- This plan complies with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements for student health plans. Health insurance plans are rated on a metal leveling system, with Platinum being the highest and Bronze being the lowest. This plan is rated as Platinum level coverage, which is considered to be excellent and designed to pay approximately 90% of the total cost of the policy's benefits.
- No annual plan maximum.
- Low deductibles - $250 for in-network and $500 annually for out-of-network annually.
- Low out of pocket maximums - $4,000 for in-network and $7,000 for out-of-network annually.
- Deductibles, co-insurance, and co-pays (including prescriptions) all apply to the out-of-pocket maximum.

COBRA is not provided under this plan.

In addition to health insurance coverage,ÌýÌýalso offers optional dental and vision coverage. These options may both be selected as twelve-month policies during Fall Open Enrollment. Enrollment in graduate student health insurance is not required to enroll in either plan. Please note the premiums for these plans remain the same regardless of when you enroll, and no payment plan is available.
